Consistent with Executive Order 2006-10 and federal law, flags throughout Michigan should be displayed at half-staff on Thursday, May 15, 2008 in observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Governor's Proclamation  Governor Jennifer M. GranholmProclamation No. 2003-4
In Proclamation No. 2003-4, signed by Governor Granholm, US flags are ordered lowered to half-staff throughout the state of Michigan and to half-mast on Michigan waters whenever one of Michigan's own is killed in the line of duty.
 
Flag Facts 
  • As of May 2nd, 2008, US flags in Michigan have been lowered to half staff/mast 142 times to honor Michigan soldiers killed in the line of duty during the invasion and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • There are four holidays each year when the flag is lowered to half-staff all day: Pearl Harbor Day (Dec. 7), Peace Officers Memorial Day (May 15), Korean War Veterans Day (July 27) and Patriot Day (Sept. 11). It should be flown at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day (the last Monday in May) and then raised to its full height.
  • Flags are lowered to half-staff on official dates and locations as set-forth by a proclomation from a State Governor, the President of the United States, or the current US Flag Code.
  • Two places where the US flag is not flown at half mast/staff are in battle and on the moon.

Lower Flags May 2, 2008, in honor of Army Private First Class John Bishop
Governor Jennifer M. Granholm ordered United States flags throughout the state of Michigan and on Michigan waters lowered for one day on Friday, May 2, 2008, in honor of Army Private First Class John Bishop, of Gaylord, who died April 23 while on active duty in Iraq. Flags should return to full-staff on Saturday, May 3. Pfc. Bishop, age 22, died in Golden Hills, Iraq, from injuries he suffered in a vehicle incident. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 32nd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Governor Jennifer M. Robinson, of Detroit, who died March 19 while on active duty in Afghanistan. Flags should return to full-staff on Saturday, March 29. Pfc. Robinson, age 20, died in Nawa, Afghanistan, from injuries he sustained when the vehicle he was repairing collapsed. He was assigned to the 782nd Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Thursday, November 29, 2007, to honor Marine Sergeant Phillip A. Bocks, 28 of Troy, who died November 9 in Aranus, Afghanistan, while conducting combat operations. He was assigned to the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center, Bridgeport, California.
Friday, November 30, 2007, to honor Army First Class Casey P. Mason, 22 of Lake, who died November 13 in Mosul, Iraq, from wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit using small arms fire. He was assigned to the 728th Military Police Battalion, 8th Military Police Brigade, 8th Theater Sustainment Command, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

The President of the United States has directed that flags be flown at half-staff until sunset on Sunday, April 22, 2007 as a mark of respect for the memory of the victims of the shootings at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia. As has been the case in the past when the President has directed flags to be flown at half-staff, flags at state facilities should be displayed at half-staff in accordance with the President's directive.

Wednesday, April 18, 2007, to honor Army Sergeant Todd A. Singleton of Muskegon, 24, who died April 8 from wounds suffered when his unit came in contact with enemy forces in Baghdad, Iraq. Flags should return to full staff Tuesday, March 15. Captain Grimes, 31, died from injuries sustained during combat patrol in Ar Ramadi when the armored Humvee he was riding in was hit by an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Infantry Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, Camp Hovey, Korea.

Flags should return to full staff Saturday, February 26. First Lt. Malson, 23, died from injuries sustained when an explosive device detonated while he was on patrol in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, Fort Drum, New York.

Lance Corporal Klein, 34, died when the CH-53E helicopter he was in crashed near Ar Rutbah, Iarq. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force out of Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

Staff Sergeant Lehto, 31, died in a non-hostile incident in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve's Marine Wing Support Group 47, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing.
